Rohit Group founders Radhe and Krishna Gupta were awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees by the University of Alberta during the June 19 convocation. The honour recognizes their outstanding contributions to philanthropy, business, and community building across Alberta and Canada.
The University awards honorary degrees through a rigorous public nomination process, recognizing individuals who have made meaningful and lasting contributions to society. This year, Radhe and Krishna join a distinguished group of past recipients—including Canadian prime ministers and groundbreaking scientists—for their impact and influence in their respective fields.
Among this year’s honourees are Kenrick Lewis, a pioneering chemist in silanes and silicones; Peggy Garritty, former U of A Chancellor and advocate for education and community; and Michel Sadelain, whose CAR-T cell therapy is revolutionizing cancer treatment. Each brings a legacy of leadership, innovation, and public service.
From humble beginnings to national impact
Radhe and Krishna Gupta founded Rohit Group in 1986 and grew it from a home-based venture in Edmonton into a national real estate company with active operations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Today, Rohit Group leads in land development, homebuilding, rentals, commercial spaces, and health infrastructure.
Radhe’s bold vision and innovative approach have shaped the company’s entrepreneurial spirit, while Krishna’s leadership in design and community engagement has grounded its purpose. Together, they’ve earned numerous accolades, including the BILD Alberta Hall of Fame and Queen’s Jubilee Medals, reflecting their long-standing impact on both industry and community.
Philanthropy that goes beyond
Radhe and Krishna Gupta’s deep commitment to the community is reflected in the many initiatives they’ve championed over the years. They are the founders of Baskets of Hope, an annual initiative that supports women and children fleeing domestic violence. They have also advanced affordable housing through Rohit Group’s long-standing partnership with the City of Edmonton on the First Place Program for first-time homebuyers.
Their philanthropic reach also extends to key causes in health, education, and wellbeing, including support for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, WIN House, NorQuest College, and more. Internationally, they’ve built a hospital, school, and cemetery in Radhe’s hometown of Joura, India. Together, their efforts continue to create meaningful, lasting change both at home and abroad.
A gift to shape the future of Canadian cities
Alongside receiving honorary degrees, Radhe and Krishna Gupta were recently recognized after Rohit Group’s $5 million philanthropic gift to the University of Alberta. The donation established the Radhe Krishna Gupta Executive Chair in Cities and Communities—an enduring academic legacy housed in the Alberta School of Business.
As the cornerstone of the new Cities Institute, the Chair will drive research, innovation, and leadership in urban development, uniting industry, academia, and policymakers to reimagine how communities are built across Canada. Learn more here.
Honouring a lifelong commitment
To further commemorate the occasion, the University of Alberta Senate donated a rare volume to the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library: Charles Dickens and Gad’s Hill Place. The collection, which tells the story of Dickens’ dream of home ownership and his pursuit of a better life, mirrors the Guptas’ own journey and serves as a fitting tribute to their dedication to community-building and impact.
On behalf of everyone at Rohit Group, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Radhe and Krishna. Their lives and leadership continue to inspire, reminding us that bold action, guided by purpose, can shape not only businesses but also communities and futures.
